This recent volume contains a collection of pa pers presented at the SIAM Symposium on Con trol Problems, held on July 22-23, 1994 in San Diego, California. Organized by the "Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics" (SIAM), in cooperation with the "Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique", the Symposium highlighted industrial control applications that incorporated recent mathematical and technological developments. The Symposium brought together leading experts from industry and academia, to present new re sults and trends in modern control theory, with an emphasis on industrial control applications. The presentations were selected especially for their practical significance in problem-solving, and all of them had sound mathematical back ground. Control theory is an interdisciplinary field, encompassing contributions from classical engineering disciplines, theoretical engineering and various areas of mathematics. The papers of the reviewed volume are as much introspective as prospective as regards real-world industrial problems.
