Abstract

This paper presents a useful COntrol System Analysis and Design Educational Tool (COSADET) built on the MATLAB 4.2.c platform which is very easy to use and does not require the knowledge of a sophisticated computer language. The tool provides a graphical environment that uses the available interface features of Matlab. The main objective of the COSADET tool is to enable the student (or designer) to design satisfactory controllers for a large repertory of systems. The software has been developed so that the user with knowledge of basic control theory and a familiarity with the windows environment be able to perform a large repertory of classical control analysis and design studies on a basic SISO control loop including a plant, a series controller and a feedback element. The main advantages, apart from the excellent user interface for inputting data, are the availability of multiple response graphs in different windows, the evaluation of control performance parameters, the easy availability of many options for both inputting parametas and displaying results (animation of results). and finally the embedded control algorithms for the calculation of different control laws. The paper includes a case study to show the type of results obtained by COSADET. The COSADET software tool is currently used for laboratory work by the NTUA students following the "control design" and "robot control"' courses.
