In their Preface to the Volume, the editors, who also assumed the role of organizers of the Conference, signal the interwoven reality of optimization, optimal control and controllability with industrial activities. This Volume has been occasioned by the International Conference on Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations, which was held at the Wasserschloss Klaffenbach near Chemnitz (Saxony, Gennany), from April 20 to April 25, 1998, and is part of the IFIP Working Group WG 7.2 activity.
